College Dean Named Trustee of North Carolina Humanities Council
Nancy Gutierrez, dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at UNC Charlotte, has been named a trustee of the North Carolina Humanities Council for a three-year term.
“Liberal learning provides the building blocks for a life characterized by passion and purpose,” Gutierrez said. “The North Carolina Humanities Council’s encouragement of diversity, innovation and education in the humanities is aligned with our goal of educating critical and imaginative thinkers through inquiry and engagement. Both institutions also support multicultural awareness and responsiveness to a world increasingly characterized by diversity and change.”
UNC Charlotte Honors Renowned Scholar Loy H. Witherspoon Upon His Death
Loy H. Witherspoon, professor emeritus of philosophy and religious studies at UNC Charlotte and a longtime confidant to University founder Bonnie Cone, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 15, in Charlotte. The founding chair of the Department of Religious Studies, Witherspoon retired in 1994 after 30 years of distinguished service at the University. “Loy Witherspoon embodied the values and aspirations of UNC Charlotte,” said Nancy Gutierrez, dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.
College Joins UNC Charlotte Data Science Initiative
The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences is now part of the UNC Charlotte Data Science Initiative, joining the College of Computing and Informatics, Belk College of Business, and the College of Health and Human Services as part of this strategic partnership. Jean-Claude Thill, Knight Foundation Distinguished Professor of Public Policy and Director of Project Mosaic, has agreed to serve as the DSI Director for the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.
Thinking Matters Talks Provide Look at Compelling Topics
Cannibalism; honey bees; race, religion and murder; climate change; and raising African orphans will be featured in this year’s Thinking Matters Talks as part of New Student Convocation Day on Monday, Aug. 22.
Judy Lekoski Named Major Gifts Officer for College
Judy Lekoski has joined UNC Charlotte as the Major Gifts Officer for the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. In this role, she is leading the private fundraising for the university’s largest and most diverse college. Lekoski brings decades of fundraising and communications expertise and an enthusiasm for applying that knowledge.
