It is with great sadness that we announce Dr. Dan White’s passing this week. Dan retired this spring after 47 years of wonderful and dedicated service to the university, particularly the Department of Religious Studies. He is a significant part of the history of UNC Charlotte.
A memorial service for Dr. White will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, June 23rd at Myers Park Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, please consider as a tribute to Dan, contributions to the Myers Park Baptist Church’s Youth Department, 1900 Queen’s Road, Charlotte, NC 28207, or to UNC Charlotte, Attn: Ali Dubois, and in the ledger write: Daniel J. White Scholarship.
Arrangements are in the care of Robertson Funeral and Cremation.
Associate Dean Banita Brown will be out of the office from June 14th to June 30th attending the HERS Leadership Institute. Therefore, Assistant Dean Alison Walsh will handle all student-related matters, Fall 2018 schedule changes and any other matters on her behalf. Assistant Dean Walsh can be reached at 7-0077.
We are pleased to launch Study the Humanities, our new website designed to help make the case for the value of studying the humanities as an undergraduate.
The website aggregates available quantitative and qualitative data that make the case that the humanities help students succeed in a wide range of careers and provide benefits beyond the marketplace. We offer this as a resource, but also as a starting point in an effort to gather additional data from the humanities community.
For all those on college campuses, we also hope you will share your success stories. Phase two of Study the Humanities will feature a clearinghouse of successful approaches humanities faculty and administrators are employing to recruit students. We hope you will help us document these strategies so that the humanities community can benefit from lessons learned on individual campuses. Visit our survey page to share your success stories.
Due to reasons of retirement or conflicts in the fall, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences needs to fill four positions on the university’s Academic Integrity Board. Will you please nominate at least one faculty member from your department who could serve as a representative for CLAS on this important board? You may submit your nominations here.
The Dean’s Office normally provides supplemental support to faculty who are presenting their research at international conferences or symposiums. The faculty member must make a request electronically to the Dean, via the following online form, see:
Funding is provided on a first-come, first-served basis, as this support is dependent on the availability of college resources. Requests that come mid-year or later may not be funded. Please complete the form and email to Kelley Fluharty.
